I’ve worked in marketing and media, and one of the things that has stuck out to me is the avid use of jargon within the industry. Use of specific jargon related to one’s field or profession is usually the norm nevertheless, the constant regurgitation of some jargon in the industry has been so substantial that meaning is lost in the process. The amount of times I witnessed terminology being used out of place or out of context is laughable. Some have resorted to utilising some jargon as buzzwords to convince listeners and sometimes even themselves that they actually know what they are talking about.

Not judging though, I think even I have been guilty of this once upon a time in a dreaded presentation or two.

I remember when I first came into the industry and jargon was flying around the office like the common cold, I felt like a tourist, the terminology was going over my head faster than my hoodie in the rain. Me being the good person I am, I have decided to decipher some of the most used terminology for those of you are fresh to the media or marketing world. Here are the ‘Top Ten Industry Buzzwords (Translated)’:

6. Audience: ‘Followers on social media’

5. Demographic: Let’s generalise a whole group of society.
